Meet Google Penguin 4.0
On September 23, 2016, Google announced that the Penguin algorithm was being updated. Along with that, Penguin 4.0 would become a real-time addition to their arsenal of over 200 ranking algorithms.
Sparing all of the technical details, Penguin is generally looking for sites with one or several of the following types of links in their profiles:
- Links coming from poor quality, “spammy” sites;
- Links coming from sites created purely for SEO link building (PBNs);
- Links coming from topically irrelevant sites;
- Paid links;
- Links with overly optimized anchor text.

Sudden drops in organic traffic can be indicative of a Penguin penalty. Review your Google Analytics data for big changes in traffic patterns. If you do have changes in traffic, the next step is to look at the quality of your backlinks.
